Artistic Coffee

Updated: May 28, 2020

There are two categories of people that really come to my mind when I think of masters of coffee artistry: roasters and baristas. Roasters take green coffee seeds shipped from around the world and make them into the solid, dark beans that most of us recognize as coffee.

The process of roasting determines the basic taste of coffee, whether it be dark, medium, or light. I know most people don’t really know how exactly the color of their coffee affects the flavor or, more importantly, how to tell which kind they will like; so, I have provided an infographic to give you a basic understanding. Take this super quick Quiz to discover what kind of coffee you will likely enjoy. I encourage you to take it to discover your new favorite coffee or at least to provide a few minutes of procrastination. Coffee flavor is an extensive subject that people spend years studying and roasters take their job very seriously.

Baristas also play a vital role in the ultimate taste of the glorious beverage that is prepared

behind their counters. Dedicated baristas spend a lot of time learning the art behind coffee flavor, as well as learning other artful coffee activities, like latte art.

While I always assumed that a roaster and barista must have a close relationship, in fact, according to this source, roasters and baristas have little contact. The collaboration between baristas and rosters that is essential in bringing us coffee is one that is unspoken.

Artists can mean a lot of things and though not all of us think of ourselves as conventionally

artistic there are many ways throughout our day that we can and often do incorporate artistry into our lives without realizing it. Coffee is itself a form of artistry for

many coffee roasters and baristas and can be one way that we can incorporate artistry into our own lives. Especially nowadays as we are all at home a lot more and less able to visit our favorite cafes and baristas we must learn to make our own coffee drinks. Having an understanding of not only what baristas do but what roasters do will give help all of us have a more well-rounded understanding of how to create, and perhaps improve upon, those drinks which before we may have taken for granted. Here you can find episodes from Bringing with Babishe’s youtube channel in which he goes over how to make espresso drinks at home. As well as a Youtube playlist that explains every part of coffee in good (but not too extensive) detail. One of our own blog writers has worked hard to recreate one of her own favorite coffee drinks from Philz. I encourage you to follow her example and become your own coffee guru.
